How candle and wax melt scents affect your mood and why

Hi lovely!

I've been fascinated by scents for years, right back 11 years ago when I trained in Beauty Therapy. We trained in aromatherapy oils and I instantly fell in love with how they work and the benefits just the scent can have on you always amazes me. So naturally when I started my business, scent was top of the list of things I couldn't wait to create.

There are so many different scents, thousands even and choosing what scent you want in your home can be overwhelming. I've found myself even sniffing laundry detergent for ages making sure I like the scent and would be happy smelling it on my clothes all day. Have you ever bought something and the smell just makes you feel sick or tired or even gives you headaches? It's not a nice feeling at all but I find it fascinating how something as simple as a fragrance can have that effect on a person, so lets get into it.

Mood Boosting

First lets talk about the "Mood boosting" scents, sounds like a selling technique or gimmick but no honestly they are in fact mood boosting. Not only do they help improve your mood but some of these have other effects on your mind and body. They can help relieve stress, help memory, and increase your productivity. My routine if I have a tonne of work to get through is always to light a mood boosting candle or wax melt and it really does help.

So what scents will have this effect on you? Here's a small list of the scents that help improve your mood:

  • Lemon

  • Lime

  • Jasmine

  • Orange

  • Vanilla

  • Ylang-Ylang

  • Rosemary

  • Raspberry

Relaxing and de-stressing

Lets move onto the relaxing and de-stressing benefits certain scents have on our mind and body. There is nothing better personally than ending a busy work day with a hot bath and a relaxing candle or melt to help me unwind. The first scent I think of is Lavender but there are so many more. Lavender is a love it or hate it scent, I've found people either swear by it and could literally bathe in it (check out the Bedtime Bath Bomb if this is you), or some people cannot stand it. It can even make them feel sick or give them headaches. It's because your body really does react to scents. As well as there being some amazing benefits there are also reactions like this. If a scent does ever make you feel dizzy, sick, make your mood lower significantly or give you a headache, this is your bodies way of letting you know it's not for you. It really is an "It's not me its you" scenario and that's ok because there are so many other scents which can help you relax, unwind and de-stress and even get a better nights sleep.

  • Lavender

  • Chamomile

  • Coconut

  • Geranium

  • Sage

  • Eucalyptus

  • Peppermint

  • Jasmin

  • Lemon

Happy Memories

Now for my favorite type of scents, the ones I like to call "Happy Memories" , these are the best kind for me and are completely different for everyone. These scents can have endless effects to your mood and evoke happy memories. Whether its a sweet scent that reminds you of your childhood, a perfume that makes you think of a loved one, or even a holiday you loved. To me this is the best kind of scent because it makes you think of happy times, memories shared and fills your home with these too. Here's a list of some of my favourite scents and ones that are popular sellers for me with the store:

  • Baby Powder - find myself lighting this when I realise Pickle isn't a baby and almost 9!

  • Rhubarb & Custard - Childhood memories a plenty with this retro sweet shop scent.

  • Fluffy Blanket - This always reminds me of getting into bed with fresh sheets or snuggling up in a cosy blanket for a movie.

  • Cabin in the woods - Its not really a memory for me, more of what I'd imagine Tom Hardy to smell like if I ever got close haha.

  • Pumpkin King - This gets me so excited for Autumn my favourite time of year.

  • Hocus Pocus - The name speaks for itself its a gorgeous musky mystical scent.

  • Pixie Dust - Very similar to a popular bath bomb stores popular scent.

I hope you've enjoyed reading and maybe learned something new about candle scents and melts and why maybe you have a favourite scent or gravitate towards the same ones over and over. I'd love to know what scents are your favourite, let me know in the comments or send me a message on Instagram.

Until next time lovely, Leah x
